Dave Wood is passionate about his work and spends almost every day in his studio, that’s when he’s not playing badminton, golf or attending his weekly yoga class! About Dave Wood
His life has been devoted to design and the lettering arts and he continues his journey of discovery with enthusiasm and a depth of feeling which comes through in each work of art he creates.
He is recognised world wide for his works which are breathtaking in their execution and in the visual pleasure they exude. He combines his 50 years of experience as a graphic designer, lettering artist, typographer and world class calligrapher to expand calligraphy into a new and exciting dimension.
Dave has been a pioneer in the promotion of calligraphy, originally holding the first ever solo exhibition of calligraphy in New Zealand in 1983. More recently in Australia Dave has continued to exhibit his work successfully in Galleries throughout Australia as well as overseas. Opening Australia’s first and only Calligraphy Gallery furthered his aim to have calligraphy recognised as an art form in its own right.
Dave enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge and experience both in the calligraphic field and the field of calligraphy design for which he is highly respected. He has taught for many local Calligraphy Societies in Australia and New Zealand as well as overseas for many years, both at Conferences and weekend workshops. About Dave’s Work
Dave’s calligraphic artwork evokes a deep emotional response within the discerning art lover. His creative ability is portrayed by his continuing exploration of new ideas and calligraphy designs, using such mediums as paper sculpture and hand made papers to explore the wider dimensions of the written word. Dave studied with Donald Jackson, Calligrapher to HM The Queen and has been a Fellow of the highly respected, London based Society of Scribes & Illuminators since 1991.
Works on vellum illuminated in 23ct gold are interpretations of Dave’s 21st century approach to calligraphy art, based on the ancient techniques and letterforms. His works are more than writing on a piece of paper, they are unique artworks of distinction.

International Acclaim
Original and limited edition handcrafted books and prints are held in the collections of the National Library in Canberra, the McPherson Collection of Rare Books in the State Library of NSW, Queensland State Library, State Library of South Australia, the National and State Libraries of Auckland, as well as many University and Private Collections in the USA and Holland.
Dave’s original artworks are also found in many collections in United Kingdom, USA and New Zealand as well as private collections in Australia.
