About this Book
This is a significant book as it is the first time I have moved away from writing the verse in a legible form. I have created a concertina book using expressive textures to convey the mood of each verse so the book becomes an artform, rather than a traditional book. The calligraphic forms have been written in gouache in various weights and colours to suggest Australia's landscape. The title of the poem, Man From Snowy River, was written freely with a large fitch brush in acylic and I then overlaid the large characters with the lettering of each verse.
The book ends are crafted from an Australian native timber, overlaid with liquid glass to enhance the beautiful grain of the Silky Oak timber. The coloured strips on the back and front were painted with acrylic prior to the application of the glass. The direction of the stripes on the front cover suggest an uphill climb by the rider in the poem and a steep descent on the back cover. The title has been etched into the surface of the timber with a sharp tool to create a subtle effect.
